Market Research

Market Research Without a Budget

Free market research works when you replace paid reports with three sources: what people search for, what they complain about in reviews and forums, and what competitors are hiring for. Together these show demand, unmet needs, and where a market is heading.

You do not need a research budget. You need three free sources and the discipline to write down what they actually say.

Source 1: what people search for

Search volume is the cheapest demand signal there is. Look for problem searches ("how do I…"), not product searches. Problem searches mean the person has pain but no solution yet.

Source 2: what people complain about

One-star and three-star reviews of competing products are the best gap list you will ever get. Three-star reviews are gold: the customer wants the product to work and is telling you exactly why it does not.

  • Collect 50 reviews of the three biggest competitors.
  • Tag each complaint: price, missing feature, support, complexity, trust.
  • The tag that appears most often is your opening.

Source 3: what competitors are hiring for

Job posts are a public roadmap. A company hiring three enterprise sales reps is moving upmarket — which usually means smaller customers are about to be underserved. That is your gap.

Sizing the market honestly

Write a one-page research memo

Finish with one page: the customer, the pain, who serves them today, what those customers hate, and the gap you would take. Anything longer will not get read — including by you. Next, turn it into a plan with our one-page business plan guide.
